Eye Exams for Adults and Seniors: The Role of Dilation

At Richmond Hill Eye Clinic, we perform thorough eye exams that often include dilation — a key step in evaluating internal eye health.

When and Why We Dilate:

  • Adults & Seniors: We routinely use Mydriacyl eye drops unless the patient declines or has a contraindication, such as narrow anterior chamber angles.
  • Duration: Effects typically last 3–4 hours. Most patients retain normal distance vision but may experience increased light sensitivity.
  • Tip: Bring sunglasses for your drive home.

Dilation allows Dr. Nan Jiang to check for signs of serious conditions like glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and macular degeneration.

Pediatric Eye Care: Lazy Eye, Strabismus & Color Blindness

Children’s eye health requires special attention. Our pediatric exams are tailored to identify and manage conditions that can affect development and learning.

Common Pediatric Screenings:

  • Amblyopia (Lazy Eye)
  • Strabismus (Eye Alignment Issues)
  • Color Blindness

We typically use Cyclogyl dilation drops in children when:

  • Their vision doesn't meet age norms.
  • Strabismus or other ocular conditions are suspected.
  • A deeper health assessment is needed.

Effects may last up to 24 hours, so plan accordingly.

What to Bring to Your Appointment

To help us provide the best care, please bring the following:

  • Full contact information (name, DOB, phone, email, address)
  • Insurance card (if applicable)
  • A current medication list
  • Sunglasses for post-dilation protection

Arriving prepared ensures a smoother check-in and a more efficient exam process.

Bringing Children? Here’s What You Need to Know

If you plan to bring other children with you, please note:

  • Each child must have their own appointment. This ensures we can provide thorough and focused care.
  • We recommend not bringing unscheduled children unless necessary, as the exam environment is structured and may not be suitable for waiting siblings.
